History & Culture

Founded in 1962, Wal-Mart has over 2.2 million employees and brings in over $10B per year. Sam Walton founded this now popular mega-store with a vision to help customers and communities save money so they can live better.

Wal-Mart now operates more than 11,000 retail units in 27 countries. On the global front, Wal-Mart is the #1 retailer in Canada and Mexico and has operations in Asia (where it owns a 95% stake in Japanese retailer SEIYU), Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

Walmart.com offers more than 1,000,000 products. The e-tailer is expanding by offering merchandise from other retailers at its new virtual mall called Wal-Mart Marketplace.

More than 245 million customers visit Wal-Mart's stores and websites each week. In the 2014 fiscal year, its sales topped $476 billion, up 1.5% from 2013 and another all-time high for the company. With such wide scope of businesses, they strive to create an environment that is friendly and supportive. People from all spheres and cultures are seen working alongside each other, to increase creativity and add dynamics.

From corporate headquarters to distribution centers, Wal-Mart looks for innovative individuals with interest in global impact. They boast competitive salaries and benefits and opportunities for promotion. The culture is shaped by the following four values: service to customers, respect for the individual, striving for excellence, and integrity. They have varied and multiple opportunities available for people to succeed.

Wal-Mart, as a corporation, is committed to diversity and inclusion and has been ranked among top retailers in Fortune Magazine's "Most Admired Companies" surveys. The company has done substantial work in corporate social responsibility, sustainability and philanthropy. Additionally, Wal-Mart and The Wal-Mart Foundation gives money away by way of grants and other donations. They particularly focus on environmental sustainability, hunger and nutrition, and women's economic empowerment.

Interview Tips & Tricks

As Mr. Sam once said, “Our people make the difference”. True to their founder’s words, Wal-Mart associates are the heart of their business – all 2.2 million of them. It is recorded that for the tens of thousands of people every year, a new job at one of their stores, distribution centers or corporate offices opens the door to a better life. They promote about 160,000 associates per year and add to create approximately 15,000-50,000 job openings at Wal-Mart.

The first step is to send in the job application online or personally submit the application at one of their kiosks. After being shortlisted, the next step is the Assessment test. This is to get an idea of how you would deal with certain situations concerning customers, supervisors, co-workers, and problems in general. The results of the Assessment, places you in what Wal-Mart calls 'Tier 1' or 'Tier 2'. People in Tier 1 are chosen over people in Tier 2. Then the First Interview; Wal-Mart interviews three candidates for every job and they choose the best candidate of those three. Lastly, the Second Interview; This interview is almost exactly like the first. If they still want you at this point, you will fill out some paperwork for a background check and then send you to a drug screening.

After the results of the drug test and background check (about 3 days), they'll call you for orientation. Orientation lasts three days and consists of learning the Wal-Mart way of life. Going in to be interviewed at Wal-Mart, not only requires enthusiasm, a hard working nature and flexibility but also an ability to tackle behavioral questions such as, “This job is a routine work, what would motivate you to do it well every day?” or “If another co-worker were gossiping about someone else something which was untrue, how would you react?” or experiential such as ”When in your last job did you go over and above what was expected of you?" or "Can you define the added value you can bring to Wal-Mart?"

The entire cycle of hiring from submitting application to receiving an offer typically takes about 1-5 weeks. However an hourly-job interview process could take about 1-2 days. Recently Wal-Mart’s CEO has announced to increase its minimum starting wage to $9 by April 2015 and $10 by next February. They are also working on providing more ownership and flexibility to the employees on their schedules, healthcare, and education; upgrade the paid sick leave policy and 401k. Employees at Wal-Mart are provided many benefits such as Education Benefits, Training & Development, and Yearly bonus’, Employee Discounts etc.  Wal-Mart has a Referral program and take in Military applications as well. Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club are committed to hiring 100,000 veterans by 2018.
